My Pilates Story

Hi, I’m Laura Shearer, a Pilates teacher with over 20 years of experience—and the proud mother of four amazing children. In 2003, I opened the first Pilates studio near my hometown, in Davis, California, with a vision to create a warm, inclusive space where people of all body types could experience the transformative power of Pilates—physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing incredible transformations in my clients. Helping them build strength, flexibility, and resilience has been one of the greatest joys of my career. Seeing clients achieve movements they once thought impossible—and watching them carry that confidence and vitality into their everyday lives—is why I love what I do.

My Pilates journey began in 2001 with certifications from Polestar Education and Stott Pilates. In 2017, my teaching was profoundly enriched when I began training with the late Jay Grimes, a revered Pilates Elder who studied directly with Joseph and Clara Pilates. Through Jay and Vintage Pilates, I immersed myself in the classical Pilates method, also known as “Contrology”—a structured system of exercises performed on specialized apparatus, honoring Joseph Pilates’ original vision.

In 2018, I transitioned Lift Pilates into a fully classical studio, incorporating the Contrology Reformer by Balanced Body, designed in collaboration with Jay Grimes. Alongside the Reformer, our studio offers the full range of classical apparatus, including the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and Guillotine. My work was even featured in The Making of The Contrology Reformer.

In July 2023, I introduced The Lift Pilates Class, a unique open studio format where clients follow personalized programs in a dynamic, community-focused environment. This innovative approach has accelerated client progress, helping them achieve results in months that previously took years.

Today, I’m privileged to work closely with Wade Edwell of Proper Pilates in Australia. Wade provides advanced education to Pilates teachers worldwide, empowering them to develop a strong self-practice within a supportive community. His philosophy mirrors the heart of what we offer at Lift Pilates.

At Lift Pilates, every client receives a personalized workout tailored to their unique needs and goals. To achieve meaningful, lasting results, I ask for a commitment of at least two sessions per week.
