My Pilates Story

I’m Laura Shearer, a second-generation Pilates teacher, studio owner, and educator with over 20 years of experience—and a proud mother of four amazing children.

I trained under Pilates Elder Jay Grimes, who learned directly from Joseph and Clara Pilates. This deep connection to the original method informs my teaching, ensuring that the Pilates I share stays true to its roots—athletic, structured, and deeply effective.

Why I Teach Pilates

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing incredible transformations in my clients. Seeing someone achieve a movement they once thought was impossible or regain strength and confidence is why I love what I do.

I believe Pilates is not just exercise—it’s a system that teaches you how to move, breathe, and feel connected to your body in a way that carries into your everyday life.

My Journey to Classical Pilates

My Pilates journey began in 2001, when I earned certifications from Polestar Education and Stott Pilates. But in 2017, my teaching was profoundly changed when I began training with Pilates Elder Jay Grimes—who learned directly from Joseph and Clara Pilates.

Through Jay and Vintage Pilates, I immersed myself in Contrology, the original, structured system of Pilates, performed on specialized apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates himself. This deepened my understanding of Pilates as a complete, integrated method—not just a workout.

The Evolution of Lift Pilates

In 2018, I transitioned Lift Pilates into a fully classical studio, incorporating the Contrology Reformer by Balanced Body, designed in collaboration with Jay Grimes. Alongside the Reformer, my studio includes the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Guillotine, and more—providing a comprehensive, authentic Pilates experience.

My work was even featured in The Making of the Contrology Reformer, a project that documented the process of recreating Joseph Pilates’ original equipment.

In July 2023, I introduced The Lift Pilates Class, a unique Open Studio format where clients follow personalized programs in a dynamic, community-focused environment. This approach has accelerated client progress, helping them achieve results in months rather than years.

Mentorship & Advanced Education

Today, I work closely with Wade Edwell of Proper Pilates in Australia, who provides advanced education to Pilates teachers worldwide. His approach aligns perfectly with my belief in self-practice, deep learning, and community-driven mastery.
