Love this article about Pilates and how it differs from yoga by my friend and colleague Jacqueline Martin.

"I have been asked this question often:

Is yoga the same as Pilates? Should I do yoga or Pilates?

From what I have learned from The Work with Jay Grimes, who was taught by Joe himself, is that Yoga takes you out of your body and Pilates brings you into your body. That, I truly believe. I used to teach power yoga and I always took people on journeys where they escaped the real world and their problems – including my own. I would facilitate long meditations at the end of the practice, where I would read, or tell stories, and they always came back for more. I took two years of Ashtanga Yoga and I got stronger yes. Committed to 4 days a week plus my own practice and I was able to start looking within and staying with what was going on during the poses. It is since The Work and allowing my body to just move and move and move, that I started to go deep within. Like peeling an onion, I went for it. In one year I did a 180 degree turn, physically,...

“The Arm Chair informs the rest of the workout,” said Andrea Maida, at her Solana Beach studio. The Arm Chair, also known fondly as the “Baby Chair,” or “Old Lady Chair,” wasn’t included as part of my contemporary Pilates trainings and I didn’t buy one for my new Gratz studio. I’d only seen it at Vintage Pilates and I had just recently read Andrea’s Blog on the Baby Chair. I was intrigued, and I wanted to find out more so I could give my view as a former contemporary instructor trying out this semi-obscure chair for the first time. So, I travelled from my home in Davis, California to take a lesson with Andrea to find out what the Arm Chair was all about.

And Baby was not in a corner. Baby was center stage all dressed in white, looking fairly medieval with her springs and leather and wooden handles. Baby saw me and I was a little intimidated. I looked sideways, demurring. ”Have a seat!” said Andrea. “I must admit I’ve been a little...

I originally wrote this for Pilates Intel (not posted as of 10/18). This is the long, unedited version.

“The Arm Chair informs the rest of the workout” said Andrea Maida, when I visited her for my private session in her Solana Beach studio in August of 2018. The Arm Chair, also known fondly as the “Baby Chair,” or the “Old Lady Chair,” wasn’t in any of my contemporary Pilates trainings and I didn’t buy one for my new Gratz studio. I’d only seen one at Vintage Pilates in Los Angeles, and I had only recently read Andrea’s blog on the Arm Chair.

I was intrigued, and I wanted to find out about the Arm Chair so I could write about it with Sunni from Going More Joe and give my view as a former contemporary Pilates instructor trying out this semi-obscure chair for the first time. So I decided to travel from my home in Davis, California to take a two-hour private lesson with Andrea to find out what the Arm Chair was all about!

Going More Joe...Contemporary to Classical Journey by Laura Cotler

I have to say that when I say I’m in, I’m all in. I’ve done a complete turn around from not really knowing who Joseph Pilates was to solely teaching his method. I’ve taught Pilates since 2000, and although I’m grateful for my contemporary Pilates education, I never quite felt like I fit into that world.

I dipped my toe into the classical Pilates pond a few years ago when I first took a private lesson with Andrea Maida at her Solana Beach studio. It was so different from what I was used to! Those springs were heavy, and that strange silver reformer with its leather straps was so hard to move all the way in! And Andrea didn’t talk at me—she watched me move.

GASP!

I wonder what she thought when I told her I wasn’t there for a workout, that I was more interested in how she taught? (OMG, I said that to her!). I think she said, “Interesting,” and went on to put me through a seriously hard workout (unbeknownst...
